It is with great sorrow that we inform you that our good friend GeneralB (William H Mitchell) has passed away suddenly at the age of 66 (July 23rd, 1951 – February 11th, 2018).

Bill was one of the founders of the SHNfamily Project and Hub and shared his love of music by helping to collect and distribute every known recorded Phish show both in the hub and on bt.etree.  Bill is survived by his mother Viola, his daughter Corina, his son Daniel, his brothers Stephen and David, his sisters Patricia and Janice, and his seven grandchildren, Joseph, Justin, Ashley, Tony, Haley, Hannah and Phillip and one great grandchild Ethan.  Please consider making a donation in his memory to The Mockingbird Foundation (, a charitable organization founded by fans of the jam band Phish in 1996 to support music education for children.

The Mockingbird Foundation is the leading provider of historical information about the band Phish and its music, having cultivated intellectual property through since 1994. A leading grantmaker in music education for children, the Foundation has now made 364 grants, in all 50 states, totaling $1,271,640. Proceeds are generated by celebrating the music of Phish through comprehensive books, innovative recordings, special art prints, creative donation premiums, and special events for the Phish fan community. The Foundation has been operated entirely by volunteer fans of the band, without any salaries or paid staff, since its inception in 1996.

Bill, aka GeneralB, was my fulltime friend and occasional antagonist. He was one of the kindest and most irreverent guys I have known. As did so many others, I spent long hours in keyboard conversation with him; unlike many others, I had the good fortune to share a couple of meals and a drunken evening with him, over a bottle of Evan Williams and a series of true-or-not tales of our adventures.
    I miss him greatly.
If there is any justice in the universe, somewhere Bill is living out one of the many dreams of building hot rod motorhomes or tiny houses or god knows what, and maybe finally playing that Gretsch White Falcon he talked about.
