The Mockingbird Foundation today released the following statement regarding the announcement last week that Phish would breakup after the August 15, 2004, Coventry show:
Like many in the Phish world, Mockingbird volunteers were surprised and saddened by the announcement of the band’s imminent breakup. Our hearts so sank that it took us more than a week to collect our thoughts and convey our reactions.
When the band stormed back from the Hiatus with so much excellent new material, it did not occur to us that the end would come so soon. Especially after the many triumphs of 2003 – from Vegas to Utah to an otherworldy jam on top of an air traffic control tower – many of us felt that there was still plenty of exciting music yet to come. We hope that the warm memories of the past many years will loom larger than the frustrated promise of realms still unconquered. We urge our friends to remember the many happy times we’ve all had in pursuit of that moment of musical and personal transcendence – from Nectar’s to Shoreline, from Red Rocks to Drum Logos, from Hampton to the Paradiso.
As evidenced in The Phish Companion, we are not the type to casually assess everything Phish as “all good.” However, our assessments are always out of profound respect for the music which inspired us. When a passing acquaintance asks “How are you today?”, the answer is often perfunctory. When a dear friend asks, we reveal our real concerns, our lingering fears, our secret hopes. For many of us, Phish has been like a dear friend. So, it is with the comfort of familiarity that we have answered the question “How is Phish today?” with great candor. Especially now that Phish’s story may soon be complete, it isn’t necessary to romanticize their remarkable 21-year endeavor. There were always highs and lows, both for the band and for individuals on their own journeys, but the highs provided a view like no other.
Beyond the music – enjoyed for so many years on countless Maxell tapes and CDRS, in cars and dorm rooms and cubicles, and now sound files on computers and MP3 players – we are thankful for all that has come along with it. We’ve made lasting friends and had defining experiences along the way. None of us, when we listened to our first Phish show, would have predicted that we’d eventually create and operate a charitable foundation. This band and the scene that’s grown up around it gave us an outlet to put our love of the music to work for a worthy cause, and to perhaps surprise ourselves in the process. The Mockingbird Foundation is just one of countless positive things that have grown out of the fact that Jon, Mike, Page and Trey decided it would be a good idea to start playing music together.
Whether the band continues or not, the music will endure and so will the Mockingbird Foundation. We will continue, well beyond Coventry, to do what we started in 1996: celebrating the music of Phish while benefitting music education. That celebration is far from over. We believe that Phish’s body of music will endure, not only in the memories of those who witnessed it live, but as an historical force, creating new fans and awakening old ones for more years than we now realize. We look forward to sharing Phish with those who missed it the first time, well after the final shows. We also welcome those new fans as volunteers in our efforts to provide comprehensive books, innovative recordings, special events, and creative donation premiums to the Phish fan community. We will of course continue to donate the dollars we raise and the donations we receive – including Phish’s net proceeds from music downloads purchased through livephish.com – to respond to the void of arts funding for music education.
We’ve worked for a long time to have the new edition of The Phish Companion in your hands during the summer tour. We have stuck to that schedule, and want to reassure fans that the book (complete through the recent Vegas shows) will still ship from the printer in June as scheduled. We’re glad that it will be here to accompany you as the final tour goes down, as well as long after the last notes of the Coventry shows fade into a moonlit Vermont night. The new Companion is the definitive written resource on Phish and its history, and will remain that until its next edition. We will of course document these farewell shows, as well as other Phish-related projects in the coming months and years, and will chronicle them in future editions of The Phish Companion as well as other Mockingbird works. The addition of new fans and volunteers means that there will always be fresh perspectives and new ways to look back at the body of music which has moved us so profoundly for so many years. And the continuing circulation of old shows, old friends, and old memories will continue to provide even more complete and accurate information.
Finally, we thank Phish and Dionysian Productions for the support and encouragement the foundation has received over the years, and, most importantly, for all the great music. It seized our minds, ignited our passions, and changed our lives. We therefore welcome these final shows as a celebration of all things Phish. Though so much has changed, and despite the frayed ends, we’re all in this together, and we still love to take that bath.

Simon & Garfunkel, Phish Feeling Charitable
The recently reunited duo of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel today (Dec. 23) made a joint $1 million donation to the Children’s Health Fund. Half the money will go to CHF’s national network for poor and homeless children; the other half will go to a pediatric preparedness program run by CHF at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
“Paul and Artie are American icons, and their actions today show that they are committed to improving the quality of life and opportunities for all of America’s children,” said Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the fund.
Redlener and Simon co-founded the Children’s Health Fund in 1987 to provide medical help for New York’s homeless children. The nonprofit organization has since expanded to cover 16 communities nationwide.
Meanwhile, jam band Phish has announced that effective Jan. 1, the group will donate net proceeds from its personal digital download service, LivePhish.com, to the Mockingbird Foundation. The organization was founded by Phish fans to promote music education for children. According to the band, LivePhish.com has generated more than $2 million in sales of live concert material.
“Playing live music has always been a source of indescribable joy for me, and everyday I count my blessings that I’m able to make my living doing something that I so deeply love,” says Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. “It’s exciting then to think that a person can come to a Phish concert, and know that all the profits from the subsequent downloads of our music will go directly into children’s music programs. The fact that the Mockingbird Foundation was created by Phish fans makes it all the more inspirational to us.”

PHISH TO DONATE NET PROCEEDS OF ONLINE MUSIC SERVICE TO CHARITY
New York, NY — Exactly one year after launching LIVEPHISH.COM, PHISH’S groundbreaking digital download service, the Vermont band has announced that as of January 1, 2004, it will donate their net proceeds from the service to The Mockingbird Foundation, a non-profit organization founded and run by Phish fans that supports music education for children.
In its first year of operation, LIVEPHISH.COM has generated over $2 million in sales. The service offers high-quality, unedited soundboard recordings of select Phish concerts in MP3 and CD-quality FLAC files via a state-of-the-art delivery system. All shows are available to fans within 48 hours after the end of each show.
Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio said of the announcement: “Playing live music has always been a source of indescribable joy for me, and everyday I count my blessings that I’m able to make my living doing something that I so deeply love. It’s exciting then to think that a person can come to a Phish concert, and know that all the profits from the subsequent downloads of our music will go directly into children’s music programs. The fact that The Mockingbird Foundation was created by Phish fans makes it all the more inspirational to us.”
The Mockingbird Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization run entirely by a volunteer staff and with almost no overhead, has made nearly $200,000 in grants since its inception in 1997. Grants to date have come from proceeds from various projects, including The Phish Companion, a comprehensive and authoritative reference guide to Phish and their music, and “Sharin’ In The Groove,” a two-disc album of Phish covers by notable artists such as Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffett, among others, available at record stores nationwide. A second edition of the book will be released in the spring.
Recipients of these grants have included schools, community centers, workshops, camps, and scholarship programs from Maine to California, from Appalachia to the Southwest, and from Kentucky to Kosovo. Their funding guidelines define music education for children broadly and somewhat unconventionally, and have enabled the Foundation’s efforts to go beyond schools to hospitals, shelters and foster homes.
Proceeds from LivePhish.com’s revenues are expected to dramatically increase the number of organizations that the Mockingbird Foundation is able to fund. The proceeds add an additional feedback loop into the relationship between PHISH and their fans: Revenue raised through fan purchases of LivePhish downloads is channeled to the volunteer, fan-run non-profit that funds music education for children.
The launch of this initiative coincides with PHISH’s year-end sold-out run at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, where the band will be performing from December 28-31.

Artistic and Production Directors Begin Immediately
The Mockingbird Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of two new volunteer positions which will coordinate artistic and production needs of various Foundation projects. Both positions, as with all Mockingbird roles, are entirely volunteer, including no compensation in order to maximize the charitable contributions generated by their generous services.
Heather Hanly has volunteered as and been appointed Artistic Director. Heather designed the Foundation’s logo, which appears on all Foundation items, and has been an important contributor in coordinating and designing other graphic needs of the foundation for several years. When not volunteering, she is a freelance designer in Oakland, California and goes by the name Hanly Design.
Phillip Zerbo has been appointed Production Director. Phillip has served a leading role in advancing the content of The Phish Companion towards the second edition, due out next spring. He is the editor of both the venue file and the sideshow chapter, and serves as at-large editor and proofreader for the book as a whole. In this new capacity he will play a central role in directing layout and production services for the new edition. Phillip is a freelance writer and editor living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The Mockingbird Foundation was incorporated in 1997 by fans of the band Phish. Through various projects, including the 928-page Phish Companion and the double-album tribute Sharin’ in the Groove, the Foundation has generated nearly $200,000 in charitable grants. All net proceeds from all of the Foundation’s projects support music education for children.
MOCKINGBIRD FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ONLINE PHISH SETLIST ARCHIVE
Fans encouraged to participate via contributions and new mailing list
The Mockingbird Foundation is proud to announce the release of a free, web-based version of its Phish setlists file. Originally published as a section of the Foundation’s 928-page book The Phish Companion the Mockingbird setlists are now available online at http://www.mockingbirdfoundation.org/setlists/
The result of countless hours of research, incorporating the submissions of hundreds of Phish fans, and featuring the support and assistance of Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro, the Mockingbird Foundation’s setlist file is the most complete and accurate record of live Phish performances in existence. The document released today is the version contained in the second printing of The Phish Companion. A team of volunteers continues to add to the archive in anticipation of future editions of that book, and fans are encouraged to contribute by submitting corrections and additions to mockingbird@mockingbirdfoundation.org.
With this release, the definitive Phish setlists archive is now freely available to all Phish fans. The online Mockingbird setlist archive is for the personal, non-commercial use of Phish fans only, and may not be reproduced in any manner. (See the website for a full copyright notice.) Special permission has also been granted for the use of the Mockingbird Foundation setlist archive by the popular “ZZYZX’s Phish Stats” Web site (a free, non-commercial, fan-run site), available at http://www.ihoz.com/PhishStats.html.
The Mockingbird Foundation setlists archive was compiled with two principal goals: raising funds for charity via the sale of THE PHISH COMPANION, and preserving the tradition of fan-based documentation of Phishtory. Revenues from the book and other Mockingbird products have enabled the Foundation to make important contributions to music education programs across the country. The Mockingbird Foundation is proud of these efforts, and such fundraising will remain its guiding purpose.
Therefore, the Foundation encourages all Phish fans who make use of this free resource to contribute to Mockingbird’s charitable fundraising program. All amounts, large and small, are disbursed swiftly in effective grants to worthy music education groups.
MBIRD-NEWS MAILING LIST
In order to better communicate its good works, the Mockingbird Foundation has also launched an electronic mailing list for interested fans and community members. Subscribers will receive occasional updates about the Foundation’s works, and will learn about ways to participate in Mockingbird activities. Mailings will be kept to a reasonable minimum; we plan only to inform our subscribers of key items of interest to them. Users may unsubscribe at any time, and subscribers’ email addresses will never be shared with any outside party.
To subscribe to MBIRD-NEWS, send an email to listserv@lists.netspace.org with a message body of “subscribe mbird-news” on a line by itself. Alternatively, see http://www.mockingbirdfoundation.org/mbird-news.html for a web-based subscription form.

The Mockingbird Foundation is proud to announce that it has been successful in its application to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for 501(c)3 designation as a tax-exempt organization. This status has been declared effective with the Foundation’s date of inception, March 26, 1997 [and was reconfirmed in 2007]. All donations to the Foundation are fully tax-deductible.
Donations of any amount can be made by check or money order, payable to the Mockingbird Foundation and mailed to 6948 Luther Circle, Moorpark, CA 93021, or made online. Donations will be immediately deposited to the Foundation’s account to help finance charitable disbursements, which are already underway and which continue on a regular basis. The Foundation will send a letter (or e-mail, if you prefer) confirming your donation for tax purposes. If you would like to donate money to the Foundation in someone else’s name as a gift (in honor or in memory), you and the honoree (or family of the remembered) will also receive a letter.
The Mockingbird Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation with no salaries, paid staff, office, or debts. All of the funds received by the Foundation (minus minor administrative expenses) benefit music education for children. We do not have the resources or expertise to provide tax advice, but do note that taxpayers may benefit by itemizing a tax-deductible contribution. We therefore welcome donations of any amount as a tax-deductible means for Phish fans and other music lovers to help support our efforts. Details about the most recent beneficiaries, as well as the Foundation’s full history of grants, are available at the Mockingbird website, www.mockingbirdfoundation.org (or simply www.mbird.org).
The Mockingbird Foundation is pleased to announced that it has received the Mimi Fishman Memorial Award, the Jammy that honors notable contributions to community service. The Board of the Foundation humbly accepts the award on behalf of the many charitable groups, especially the organizations involved in music education, that benefit from its fundraising activities.
Mimi Fishman Foundation Director David Shulman presented the award to long-time Mockingbird volunteers Jack Lebowitz and Kat Griffin at last night’s Jammys ceremony, which took place at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. The show featured more than five hours of non-stop music and award presentations, culminating in a two-stage dueling jam on “Cissy Strut” in honor of the Meters. Awards were presented in eleven categories.
The Mockingbird Foundation extends its thanks to the fans who voted and to Jambands.com, for spreading their love of music. Most of all, the Foundation is grateful to the inspiring memory of Mimi Fishman, mother of Phish drummer Jon Fishman, for her years of service to the community.
Finally, the Foundation congratulates the other community service organizations that were nominated, and commends them for their charitable efforts.
The Mockingbird Foundation was founded as an all-volunteer organization in 1997 by fans of the band Phish. Its members have released The Phish Companion, a 928-book about the band and its music, and are preparing for the release of Sharin’ in the Groove, a double-disc cover album. The Foundation’s net proceeds go to charity, supporting music education for children.
The Mockingbird Foundation is pleased to announce the distribution of its double-disc charity cover album. SHARIN’ IN THE GROOVE: CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF PHISH includes contributions from Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffett, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Tom Club, the Wailers, John Scofield, and Hot Tuna, plus members of Los Lobos and Pavement, and many more. Proceeds support music education for children.
The Mockingbird Foundation and Trans World Entertainment have agreed to partner in a brick-and-mortar relationship which ensures availability of the release at more than 1100 stores in 44 states as well as through its website (www.twec.com), where it will soon be a featured highlight. Phish Dry Goods (www.phish.com/drygoods) and Homegrown Music Network (www.homegrownmusic.net) are showing their support for the project by offering it online as well.
The tribute is now available online for preorders through all three partners. (See direct links below.) On July 17, it will be available at Trans World brick-and-mortar stores including Disc Jockey, Camelot Music, Coconuts Music & Movies, FYE (For Your Entertainment), Planet Music, Record Town, Spec’s Music, Strawberries, The Wall, and Waxie Maxie’s.
Additionally, the Mockingbird Foundation is offering several bonus tracks for download from its website. The tracks include “Wolfman’s Brother” by Phil Lesh and Friends and “Cars Trucks Buses” by the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and are available only to those who have completed a preorder at one of the three partner websites.
The Mockingbird Foundation was incorporated by Phish fans in 1997. Sharin’ in the Groove is the second fund-raising effort of the all-volunteer organization. The group’s first project was a 928-book, The Phish Companion, which was published last fall by Backbeat Books (formerly Miller Freeman Books) and has sold nearly 34,000 copies. The Foundation’s net proceeds from both projects are donated to charity, supporting music education for children.
Acknowledgments for The Phish Companion…
From the moment this project began, we hoped that hundreds of fans, both on and off the Internet, would contribute to this project and know that they helped create a fan-based book that will benefit worthy charities and further spread the word about the band that we all love. Our expectations were more than exceeded, and we were not fully prepared for the outpouring of support, ideas, and contributions, which ultimately came in some form from literally thousands of fans. Although a core group of names contributed in many areas, there are over 1,400 individual contributors acknowledged here (after accouting for all repititions. We have attempted to thank and acknowledge as many as possible, where explicit contributions have been enumerable and noted. We have likely forgotten some names, either because their contributions were less concrete or because our tracking of contributions has been incomplete. Both failures are bound to have occurred in a four-year process directly involving hundreds in the production of a single book, and so we add apology to the following acknowledgements.
We of course appreciate the band, for their many years of practice, performance, and more. We also appreciate Phish’s management company, Dionysian Productions, both for doing what they do to keep Phish going, and for their cooperation and support in our own endeavor. They were contacted about this project early on and expressed enthusiasm about the idea of a fan-produced work for the benefit of charities, and we have much appreciated (and benefited by) their help and support. We continue to keep Dionysian abreast of project developments, and will continue to work passionately for the benefit of charities, and in celebration of Phish, their music, and the fan community. A special note of gratitude is reserved for Kevin Shapiro, Phishs Archivist, for his inestimable assistance in setlist corrections and verification. We have also benefited greatly from the input and support of Tom Marshall, Dave and Luann Abrahams, John Paluska, Jason Colton, and Beth Montuori, and to Shelly Culbertson for originating documentation of Phish setlists through the original Helping Phriendly Book and for the spirit in which she did so.
The project owes its origin to the interest and dedication of Craig DeLucia, and a great deal of thanks to Craig as well as Mark Toscano, Charlie Dirksen, and Ellis Godard. We would also like to thank those other founding members of this project who, while no longer active in the administrivia of board activities, have always been and continue to be part of the productive and moral fabric that has helped ensure our success, including Dave Donohue, Charles Franz, Herschel Gelman, Eddie Dinel, Joe Rioux, and John Wood. We are indebted to our literary agent Christian Crumlish for his thoroughness in connecting the vision of those founders with the commitment of a publisher, as well as to Jeffrey Kahn and Miller Freeman for backing our vision with both expertise and enthusiasm.
We are deeply indebted to those contributors who, at one time or another, served as chapter editors and brought together the wide array of contributions received, or who made significant contributions of their own towards producing a cohesive set of chapters: Craig DeLucia, Charlie Dirksen, Charles Franz, Herschel Gelman, Chris Glushko, Jeremy Goodwin, Kim Hannula, Jack Lebowitz, Jim Raras, Dan Seideman, David Steinberg, Mark Toscano, and Tim Wade.
In particular, we are indebted to Kevin Shapiro, Phish’s archivist, for his help in verification and compilation, and to the original Setlist Working Group initially, Craig DeLucia, Charlie Dirksen, Benjy Eisen, Charles Franz, Herschel Gelman, Phil Nazzaro, Dan Purcell, Jim Raras, Dan Seideman, and Darius Zelkha for their tireless dedication, which has produced a document with hundreds of new shows and thousands of additional corrections over any previous setlist collection.
The Setlist Working Group was primarily assisted by Aaron Rosenthal, Billy Rickards, Bradley Lonard, Chris Bertolet, Chris Glushko, Christian McKee, Dan Hantman, Dan Mielcarz, David Shulman, Ellis Godard, Erik Swain, Grant Calof, Jeremy David Goodwin, Jeremy Welsh, Jesse Appelman, Julia Mordaunt, Kate Holloway, Kazimierz O. Wrzeszczynski, Marc Toscano, Martin Acaster, Mike Preston, Phillip Zerbo, Saul Wertheimer, Scott Hershkowitz, Syd Schwartz, Tim Wade, and Yance Davis. This group is primarily responsible for compiling the information in the setlists section of this book, as their output bears almost no resemblance to the document Charlie had originally given them. The final output you see before you, though, would not have been possible without the hard work of many fans. Deserving special mention are Craig, Charlie, Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro, Ellis, Dan Purcell, Dan Hantman, and Keith McCrary. We’d like to thank Dean as well, for all of his advice and knowledge, especially in the early days of the project. Also, Charles Franzs role as a dedicated proofreader of the file was invaluable to the accuracy of this chapter.
For assisting the Setlist Working Group and their auxiliaries in this mammoth effort by sharing and reviewing tapes, contributing data, and engaging in lengthy discussions about accuracy and notation, we also want to thank Aaron Brandewie, Aaron Rosenthal, Adam Roberts, Adam Rosenberg, Aldo Torre, Allison Tuthill, Amanda Henry, Andy Puckett, Benji Eisen, Billy Rickards, Bradley Lonard, Brent Cusher, Brian Hayle, Brian Levine, Brian Lipman, Butch Weiss, Carl Distefano, Chad Fagin, Charles Franz, Charlie Dirksen, Chris Barnes, Chris Bertolet, Chris Cottagio, Chris Fischer, Chris Glushko, Christian McKee, Christopher R. This book includes no narrative history of the band, in deference to the official The Phish Book. We acknowledge Dean Budnick for The Phishing Manual, the maiden contribution of Phish history in book form; and Andy Bernstein, Brain Chasnoff, and Locke Steel for the Pharmer’s Almanac, which has served fans wanting a printed resource, and which has documented the scene and other aspects ancillary to the band and their music. We have been repeatedly impressed by the journalism of Richard Gehr and Paul Robicheau, who treat Phish and their music with a seriousness lacking in typical coverage, and we are increasingly pleased by the ability of other journalists to discern something special behind the deceiving veil of familiar patterns, symbols, and behaviors.
Above all, and on behalf of all of the contributors to the book as well as the beneficiaries of the charitable proceeds, we thank you the reader, and look forward to your reactions.
With sincerity and hope,
The Board of Directors of the Mockingbird Foundation
