ShowSticks Partnership Launched

On March 23, 2010, in Press Releases, by mbird

New Image Community sells Concert-Friendly Glow Sticks to Fund Music Education

Today, the Mockingbird Foundation launches a partnership with a new website dedicated to celebrating the sky-filled light festivities that fans have come to known as “glow stick wars”. The site will feature specially branded products with fan-friendly packaging, and a percentage of proceeds will be donated to Mockingbird to support music education.

While “glow stick wars” sometimes entail heavy, pointed, injury-inducing items, GlowStickWars.com distributes only thin, concert-friendly, 8″ loops, and they’ve branded their own just for fans: Show Sticks. A percentage of all sales go to The Mockingbird Foundation, whose logo and website URL appear on the customized packaging. The packaging itself was designed just for fans, including a recycleable, reuseable tube with a cap that pops off and on, ready to store collected Show Sticks for the next toss, or to serve some other purpose on tour.

GlowStickWars.com will bring together pictures, videos, discussion, planning, and more, and aims to build a “first-of-breed concert photo and video sharing community”, where members own their own content. The site is offering a pre-sale discount on tubes of 100 concert-friendly glowrings for $5.99, plus entry into a Bonnaroo ticket giveaway. Plus, those who pre-register now to reserve a username will receive an emailed coupon for a free tube with their first order of Show Sticks.

The Mockingbird Foundation is the leading provider of historical information about Phish and its music, both in print and online. It fund-raises through books, innovative recordings, creative donation premiums, special events, and the Phish.net website. Operated entirely by volunteers since incorporation in 1996, the foundation has no paid staff, salaries, or office, and disburses more than 99% of funds raised to charity.

Funds solely support music education for children. Most are distributed through a two-tiered application process intended to add critical support for important and innovative programs serving diverse populations. Currently, only about 1% of the thousands of inquiries received each year can be funded. Please consider helping raise that percentage!

Phish is a rock band that started in 1983 and grew to become one of the highest-grossing live acts in the nation before performing a “final show” August 15, 2004. They returned last March, and are now as strong as ever. For more information about Phish, please visit http://www.phish.com.

The Phish.net setlists are the definitive collection of information about Phish’s performance history, and the result of decades of all-volunteer work by untold numbers of fans, including ongoing interaction with band management and colleagues. The data is the core intellectual property of the Foundation, actively protected by copyright, and provided to third-parties in limited fashion through a set of APIs as well as comprehensively under a standardized licensing agreement.

Running on Reunion Rumors

On July 15, 2008, in Press Releases, by mbird

RUNNING FOR MOCKINGBIRD, WITH REUNION RUMORS IN MIND

There is certainly a lot to be excited about right now in the Phish community. The Mockingbird Foundation is thrilled by these events and, of course, by the prospect of Phish reuniting. Last year, the Foundation created the Phish Reunion Fund, which is to be disbursed as soon as possible after — and if — it is announced that Phish will perform one (or more) public show(s).

In honor of Phish, and in an effort to raise more money for children’s music education, Foundation Board Member Charlie Dirksen will run the San Francisco Half-Marathon on Sunday, August 3, his third run in support of music education for children. And, he’ll match the first $250 in donations!

Please consider donating to the Phish Reunion Fund in any amount. Every dollar counts and will support music education programs for children. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been operated by volunteers for more than ten years — there is no paid staff, or office. Your donation is fully tax-deductible.

If you wish to donate, you may do so by credit or debit card or by clicking on the “Make a Donation” button below. Or, you can write a check made payable to The Mockingbird Foundation and mail it to The Mockingbird Foundation, c/o The Godards, 6948 Luther Circle, Moorpark, CA 93021.

If you’re running any marathons (or parts thereof) and would like to help Mockingbird, and get a boost from folks pulling for you during the run, we’d love to hear from you. This is Charlie Dirksen’s second run for the Foundation. David Madden will run in the ING New York City Marathon in November, also in support of Mockingbird.

We thank you for your continued support of our unique organization, which we believe was the first 501(c)(3) organization founded by fans of a rock band to raise funds in support of music education programs nationwide. We encourage anyone interested in helping us fundraise in the future to contact Ellis Godard, the Foundation’s Executive Director, at ellis@mbird.org, with your ideas.

Sincerely,

The Mockingbird Foundation

Running for Mockingbird

On January 30, 2008, in Press Releases, by mbird

The Mockingbird Foundation is pleased to announce another fundraiser to help raise funds for music education programs. Board member Charlie Dirksen will be running three races in February in honor of Kristen Godard and the Foundation’s Funding Committee (http://www.mockingbirdfoundation.org/funding/). Analyzing the hundreds of grant proposals the Foundation receives every year takes a great deal of time. The Board is enormously appreciative of this work and the other work performed by the Funding Committee. The Foundation has no
paid employees or staff and is run entirely by volunteers.

As part of this fundraising effort, Charlie will run a 5K (3.1 miles) this weekend on Sunday, February 3, in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco; a half-marathon (13.1 miles) in Vancouver, British Columbia, on February 10; and a 10K (6.2 miles) in downtown San Francisco as part of the city’s Chinese New Year festivities on February 17.

Despite their inestimable value, music education programs are often eliminated by school districts hoping to cut costs. These programs increasingly depend on grants from 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations like The Mockingbird Foundation in order to operate at all. Your support has already made a difference in the lives of countless children nationwide and will make a difference in the future.

We hope that you will make a tax-deductible donation in ANY amount.
Every dollar counts. Charlie will match up to the first $250 in donations received as part of this fundraiser. If you choose to donate, your donation will be fully tax-deductible. You may donate by mail or on-line, including by credit card, through our web page:
http://www.mockingbirdfoundation.org/donations/. Thank you!

Sincerely,

THE MOCKINGBIRD FOUNDATION

Your donation will help inspire Charlie in this effort, and a donation of ANY SIZE AT ALL is encouraged and welcomed. For more information on The Mockingbird Foundation, please visit www.mockingbirdfoundation.org.

Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda was formed in March 1998 at SUNY New Paltz in New York. The band soon outgrew the Hudson Valley in 2000 after multiple local sellouts and moved to Boston that winter. Since Arcoda reformed on Halloween 2001, the band has been growing steadily – appearing with acts The Slip, Ulu, Garaj Mahal and more. In 2003, Arcoda added the 3-piece Two Dolla Crack Horns to their live show, which is composed of Sam Kininger (Soulive), Brian Thomas (Jon Brown’s Body), and Mark Erickson (Sugarcoat). Arcoda has received positive feedback from such luminaries as Ed Toth of Vertical Horizon and Jim Loughlin of moe., and the Poughkeepsie Journal called …At First Sight an “excellently produced collection that captures the intimacy and urgency of a live performance and the refined nuances obtained only by spending hours and hours in a recording studio.” For a complete press kit for Pete Pidgeon & Arcoda, please consult the band’s website at http://www.arcoda.com and click on the “band” page.

Vegas Tickets Auctioned

Foundation Announces Auction, including Four Vegas Tickets
Offers tax deduction “if you help us help the kids”

[Maryland Heights, MO; Saratoga Springs, NY] – On Thursday, January 30, the Mockingbird Foundation announced its first charity auction, a fifteen-item package featuring four phish tickets. To allow the winner time to make travel plans, bidding will last for only one week, and will close on February 5th. The auction is being hosted by the Mimi Fishman Foundation, and is available via www.mimifishman.org/whatsnew.html.

“The elements of this package were donated as our most recent funding window is drawing to a close,” said Ellis Godard, Executive Director of the Mockingbird Foundation. “Every day, we’re hearing about more programs whose funding was cut, more classes without instruments, and more innovative ideas for teaching music to kids. This auction makes a very real difference in how many groups we can help in March.”

The biddable package includes two tickets to each night (Feb 15 and 16) of Phish’s upcoming shows at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, as well as two aftershow passes for the first night. It also includes a Mockingbird Foundation T-shirt, the 928-page all-volunteer encyclopedia The Phish Companion, and the best-selling double-disc tribute album Sharin’ in the Groove, plus two Foundation stickers, two Foundation magnets, and two Foundation bookmarks.

The Mockingbird Foundation was incorporated in 1997 to generate charitable proceeds from Phish fandom. It donates proceeds from a book, album, and related events to music education for children. The Mimi Fishman Foundation was created in 1999 to generate proceeds for charity. It donates proceeds from auctions and events to a variety of causes including glaucoma, cystic fibrosis, and YMCA summer camps.

Both organizations are all-volunteer, all-for-charity nonprofit grantmaking entities created by Phish fans and operating primarily in cyberspace. Neither has any salaries, paid staff, office, or assets other than what is licensed and disbursed. For more information, please visit www.mockingbirdfoundation.org and www.mimifishman.org.

On December 8, 2001, in Press Releases, by mbird

THE MOCKINGBIRD FOUNDATION is pleased to announce a benefit show on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at the Tongue & Groove (Van Ness & Union) in San Francisco. The benefit will feature the improvisational rock of TEN TON CHICKEN and OUROBOROS. Ten Ton Chicken will play two sets after Ouroboros’s set. Showtime 9:30pm.

The all-volunteer, nonprofit Mockingbird Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation. It was founded by Phish fans in 1997 to benefit music education for children. The Foundation compiled the most encyclopedic bible on Phish to date, THE PHISH COMPANION, which was released in Fall 2000 by Backbeat Books (formerly Miller Freeman). The Foundation’s latest project, a tribute album to Phish called SHARIN’ IN THE GROOVE, features an exciting and unusual group of musicians, including Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Arlo Guthrie, Amfibian (featuring Phish lyricist Tom Marshall), Project Logic with John Scofield, Dave Hidalgo & Louie Perez (of Los Lobos), and many others. More information on the tribute album and the Foundation is available at http://www.mockingbirdfoundation.org/.

The Bay Area’s own TEN TON CHICKEN opened the FOUNDATION’s tribute album release party at the Great American Music Hall last summer. Their set was very well-received by the many Phish fans in attendance. See http://www.tentonchicken.com/ for more information about them and their great music!

OUROBOROS is turning heads with their improvisational rock. They contributed a cover of Phish’s WILSON to the FOUNDATION (see http://mockingbird.goodhumans.net/bonus.html), and they graciously seek once again to help benefit music education for children with this event. For more information about them, check out http://www.gratefulfamily.com/ouroboros/snakeviewer.html

We hope you join us, TEN TON CHICKEN, OUROBOROS, and other Phish fans in support of music education for children on February 2 at the Tongue & Groove. If you can’t make it but are interested in supporting the FOUNDATION in other ways, then please drop cdirksen@earthlink.net a line.

Sincerely and Happy Holidays,
